The Hornby Elite is now available, some six months after the Hornby Select, and it is a totally different piece of equipment. While the Select was designed as an introduction to digital command control, the Elite is far more sophisticated and yet attractively priced. The attractive packaging contains the console, a 4 amp power supply, the connection lead and an instruction book.
The Elite has the ability to address 254 locomotives and up to 255 solenoid operated accessories and points (depending on the accessory and point decoders used). The 17 button keyboard includes not only 0-9 keys (which are alphanumeric) but other keys marked 'locomotive', 'accessory', 'function', 'on/off', 'menu', 'escape' and 'stop'. These provide the basis for programming the locos and accessories. Locos may be addressed 0-9999.
The unit incorporates two rotary controllers which both control the locomotives but also assist in registering each loco and accessory to the Elite. The LCD has two rows of 8 characters, train direction indicators, a speed indicator and a set of numbers 0-12 which show the functions that are switched on in respect of the locomotives currently under control. A clock is also provided which may be set to real time or set up to ten times faster.
This is a very sophisticated piece of equipment which does not have the short comings of the Select.
The Elite has many more advanced features:
- will drive 10 trains simultaneously, provided the necessary power is available.
- can support a four amp power supply.
- external boosters can be supported.
- incorporates 128 speed steps.
- up to 255 inertia steps.
- can support locos/accessories with up to 8 functions.
- can support 255 locomotives or other products (containing the loco decoder) and 255 accessories.
- supports XpressNet protocol.
- includes interface for use with a PC (to support upload of new firmware and use of third party applications).
- includes an uncontrolled 15V DC accessory outlet.
- LCD screen can support programmable alphanumeric input.
- the 'Elite' unit is 'Railcom'(ŽLenz Zyztems) enabled.
