This is a major step forward for Hornby. For many
years the mainstay of modern image train sets for Hornby was the High Speed Train (HST)
which achieved a record level of sales. While this is still an important part of Britain's
inter-city services, Hornby believe that they should be looking to the interests of new
young modellers and the red and silver trains run by Virgin Trains are what children want
now. They therefore took the step of producing models that make up a Class 390 Pendolino.
The cars being produced by Hornby are the two power cars, a 1st open with a non-working
pantograph, standard buffet, 1st open and standard open.
The train pack contains set 390012 'Virgin Star'. This consists of a motorised power car (DMKFO) '69112', a non-motorised power car (DMSO) '69212', a 1st open with a non-working pantograph (PTFO) '69512' and a 1st open (MFO) '69612' which carries the name. The power car on the sample we received is ready-fitted with a chip for DCC control and so the catalogue number has an 'X' suffix. It is worth mentioning that the well illustrated instruction leaflet which comes with the model includes drawings to show the consists of both a 4-car and a 9-car train.
