Like the 3-plank and 6-plank wagons in the Hornby catalogue, the 4-plank was introduced in 1995. These were the first wagons to be designed by Hornby on a computer (CAD) and were marketed in special boxes with a '1st' logo. They were later absorbed into the general range. Since their introduction, 23 versions of the 4-plank have been released.
The New Cransley Iron & Steel Co. Ltd model is grey with black ironwork and white lettering, shaded black. It is numbered 76, a number carried by a real 4-plank wagon which was the last of ten built in 1927 by the Birmingham Carriage & Wagon Company. It was recorded as being for carrying coal but was more likely used for carrying ironstone. The Kettering based company dated from 1894.
