No subject is more popular with young modellers than 'Flying Scotsman' and no subject has seen as many versions produced than the 'Flying Scotsman' made by Hornby. A set based on the locomotive has become a permanent feature in the catalogue but, over the years, Hornby have varied the set. R1072 is the latest version and has three coaches whereas the one it replaces (R1039) had four.
The locomotive is the 1998 model, with tender drive, in the guise of Class A1 with a round dome and no smokebox patch. It has a corridor tender and is in LNER green as '4472'. It comes with couplings at both ends and separately provided brake rods and brake pipes for the bufferbeams. The three coaches are the 1977 models of teak Gresleys. The composites are numbered '22356' and '22357' and the brake end is numbered '4236'. These are the same numbers that were carried by three of the coaches in the set that this one replaced. The coaches have light grey roofs and darkened metal wheels.
The track makes a large oval with two sidings and the set includes controller, wall plug transformer and leads. There is also a Trakmat and single sheet catalogue.
