Despite the mainly rural nature of this area, the Midland Railway and the Great Western Railway competed with one another to get what custom was available. The network remained stable until the 1950s when rationalisation started to occur. The author and his father, lived in the area and were keen photographers. The book contains photographs they took during their travels as railway enthusiasts. This is the first of what is to be a series by this author which will reveal previously unpublished material from a large photographic collection. The back cover carries an early GWR map of the area which zones routes according to permitted axle loading.
