The railways in Kent serve commuter, industrial, branch line and international traffic and as such have a unique mixture of purpose. It is this unusual mixture that makes the county an interesting subject to study in railway terms. During the '50s and '60s Tony Burges travelled widely in Britain, recording the changes that were taking place on our railways. The vast bulk of his railway photographic collection has never been published. This book provides the opportunity to see some of this work for the first time. The book is in Ian Allan's British Railway Pictorial series and is the second title in this series by this author. Maps at the front of the book shows Kent's rail network in 1950 and 2005. These reveal less change than in some parts of the country.
