This book has been produced as a companion to Mike King's An Illustrated History of Southern Coaches, published under the OPC imprint in 2003. The production is up to the usual high standard of OPC books. There were a significant number of branch lines operated by the Southern Railway and the problem was to provide a cost effective service on lines that produced only limited revenue. Like the GWR, the Southern found the answer lay in push-pull stock which allowed the train to be driven in one direction from a special end coach which contained a driver's cab and controls. Some were converted coaches and others were specially built. These were eventually ousted by DMUs which were the ideal solution to branch line economy. The 50 pages of drawings will be of assistance to modellers wishing to produce their own models of specific types.
